Why we celebrate

Same Savitri–Satyavan story: devotion at the vat (banyan) tree for a husband’s long life. The name “Vat” means the banyan tree, not “vrat” misspelled.

Regional notes

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal: Primary date is Jyeshtha Amavasya — often called Savitri Amavasya or Vat Savitri Amavasya.

Maharashtra & Gujarat: The same observance is typically on Jyeshtha Purnima instead — see “Vat Purnima” in the calendar.

Border regions: Whether the tithi is taken at sunrise or moonrise can shift the day by one — check your local panchang or temple.

Note: Shani Jayanti also falls on this Amavasya in the calendar; your family may emphasize one or both.

How it is celebrated

Married women observe fast, worship a banyan tree or its symbolic stand-in, tie thread, and hear the katha — especially in North Indian households.

Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya — new moon day; morning puja at the vat tree (some regions use the previous evening — verify locally).

Foods & offerings

Fruits, soaked chana, puri; strict fast until parana after puja in many families.

Rituals

1. Early bath and clean clothes.
2. Puja at banyan tree with water, roli, rice, and flowers.
3. Tie sacred thread around the tree; parikrama if tradition requires.
