Choghadiya Today: Why It Changes by City
A WhatsApp card titled “Choghadiya today” often prints one city’s sunrise as if it applied to every Hindu kitchen. It does not. Choghadiya (Chaughadia) is a traditional day-and-night muhurat ladder tied to local sunrise and sunset at your coordinates.

What Choghadiya is
Many households glance at Choghadiya the way they glance at Rahu Kaal: a reminder about starts, not a command to freeze ordinary life. Daytime is split into eight equal parts from sunrise to sunset. Nighttime is split into eight equal parts from sunset to the next sunrise. Each part carries a traditional name.

The weekday decides which name sits on which of the eight parts. The city sun decides when those parts fall on the wall clock. Summer days are longer; winter days are shorter; longitude shifts the whole ladder.
Why it changes by city
Chennai and Edison, New Jersey, can share a weekday and still disagree on the clock, because dawn on the Coromandel Coast is not dawn in North Jersey. Mumbai and Kolkata share IST and still differ. A Delhi poster forwarded to Wayne is still Delhi’s horizon.
Do not “convert” an Indian chart by subtracting hours. Open the city page for the place you are standing in. Timings follow local sunrise, not a national IST mantra.
How to read Choghadiya today
- Open panchang by city and pick your place, or use the city chip on the Hindu calendar.
- Open the Choghadiya tab for day and night slots, or the city panchang table.
- Read Amrit / Labh / Shubh if you are choosing a start; note Udveg, Kaal, and Rog if your family watches those.
- If you also watch Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, or Gulika, those use the same city sun on Muhurat.
- For a samskara or temple booking, confirm with your mandir. The table is a reading aid.
Amanta / Purnimanta: what does not change Choghadiya
